The Siemens 6ES5 942-7UB11 is a central processing unit (CPU) for the Simatic S5-115U series of programmable controller and has many features including PID control. CPU 942 contains both a microprocessor and an application-specific intergrated circuit (ASIC). The microprocessor is responsible for the programmer interface module functions, processes interrupts, processes substitution operations and controls the S5 bus, as well as controlling the ASIC that handles high-speed processing of STEP 5 operations.

The processor itself has an internal 10 Kbyte RAM that stores the control program, but the PLC's memory can be expanded with additional memory modules (RAM, EPROM and EEPROM submodules available).

S5-115U processors fit inside a mounting rack along with other modules such as power supplies, communications modules and input and output modules. This PLC series is suitable for mid range performance automation tasks in areas such as machine control systems, process automation and process monitoring.
